Safe Driving & Recruitment-Retention Awards
The following two awards are sponsored by VFIS. For both awards, VFIS pays the winner’s travel and lodging expenses to attend the award ceremonies at the VCOS Symposium in the Sun in Clearwater Beach, Florida and VCOS will donate free registration to the award recipients. Nominees must be IAFC members. The deadline for both applications is June 30, 2012.
Emergency Vehicle Safe Operations Achievement Award – 2012
The Emergency Vehicle Safe Operations Achievement Award supports the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation (NFFF) and the United States Fire Administration (USFA) initiatives to reduce firefighter injuries and deaths as a result of vehicle accidents. The award is presented to a department that has experienced zero vehicle accidents during the period June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. Vehicle accidents are defined as state reportable accidents and no injuries occurred in the accident. The comprehensive nature of the department’s fleet safety policy is evaluated in this process.

The 2011 recipient of this award is the Ponderosa (TX) Volunteer Fire Department. Fire Chief Fred Windisch accepted the award on behalf of the department.

The 2010 recipient of this award is the DuBoistown (PA) Fire Department. Fire Chief Richard A. Knecht accepted the award on behalf of the department.

The 2009 recipient of this award was the King Township Fire Department in Ontario, Canada. Fire Chief Bryan Burbridge accepted the award on behalf of the department.
VFIS Recruitment and Retention Award – 2012
The Recruitment and Retention Award recognizes success and excellence in the retention and recruitment of emergency service organization members. The award is presented to a department that has experienced positive results to a comprehensive approach to retaining and recruiting members during the period June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. The comprehensive nature of the department’s recruitment and retention program will be evaluated in this process.

The 2010 recipient of this award is the Montgomery County (MD) Volunteer Fire-Rescue Association. Mr. Eric N. Bernard, Executive Director and Ms. Marcine Goodloe, President accepted the award on behalf of the department.

The 2009 recipient of this award was the Worthington (KY) Fire Department. Fire Chief Gary Yurt accepted the award on behalf of the department.
